Wild at Netarts

Netarts Bay and Spit

From coastal forests to salty waters, Netarts Bay is a vibrant gem of the Tillamook Coast, supporting shore birds, oysters, sea stars and much more.

And the ongoing Explore Nature series puts this beautiful area within reach, with hikes and tidepool discovery sessions scheduled throughout August.

On Friday, Aug. 10, adventurous souls will get the chance to explore the dynamic ecosystem of Netarts Spit while searching for shorebirds and learning about Oregon’s snowy plover.

Led by Oregon State Park Rangers, Friends of Netarts Bay and Joe Liebezeit, avian conservation program manager for the Audubon Society of Portland, the three-mile guided walk will set off at 9 am from Cape Lookout State Park. Participants will learn about new efforts to monitor snowy plovers along the coast while enjoying the scenic beauty of Cape Lookout State Park and Netarts Bay. Registration is required.

Sunday and Monday, Aug. 12 and 13, are the last chances to join Friends of Netarts Bay for Oceanside Tidepool Discovery Days. Starting at 8 am each day, staff and volunteers will teach visitors about anemone clone wars, how a sea star eats and how hermit crabs steal shell homes from other crabs. Oregon State Parks and the Tillamook Estuaries Partnership will also be onsite in the tide pools helping visitors understand what is living along the coastal edge — and how these creatures are able to thrive there. Registration is recommended but not required.

Later in the month, lush, old-growth forest, giant octopus trees, historic lighthouses and outstanding vistas will all be on offer as walkers tackle a trek along the Cape Meares headland on Wednesday, Aug. 22. The family-friendly, easy-to-moderate hike will set out at 9 am. Registration is required.
