Newport’s Agate Beach Surf Classic will draw hopeful surfers from all over the West Coast for a weekend of big wave action this weekend.
Running from from Friday, Sept. 6, through Sunday, Sept. 8, the contest features categories for surfers of all ages, from kids 12 and under through to the Legends section for surfers aged 50 and older. Prizes are given to the top three competitors in each division.
Contestants can pick up their packets on Friday evening at Ossies Surf Shop in South Beach. Surfers will compete on Saturday and Sunday at Agate Beach just south of the lighthouse, with heats starting at 8 am.
Online pre-registration is $40, rising to $50 on the day of the event and closes 15 minutes prior to the first heat. Spectating is free and there will be music, food and a beer garden throughout both days, plus a raffle on Sunday.
All proceeds from the event go towards the youth scholarship program, which allows children from economically disadvantaged households the opportunity to participate in programs at the Newport Recreation Center.
