Ready for the board meeting?

Newport’s Agate Beach Surf Classic will return this weekend, drawing hopeful surfers from all over the West Coast.

Contest categories include kids aged 12 and under, non-gender stand-up paddleboard, women aged 13 to 29, junior men age 13 to 18, women aged 30 and over, men aged 19 to 49, Pro/Am men’s shortboard, and men aged 50 and over.

And there’s more at stake than just bragging rights, with the first- and second-place winners in each category taking home cash prizes of $150 and $50, respectively.

“The competition is one part, with the prizes and raffles, but the most important part is the community aspect,” said Dan Hasselschwert of event sponsor Ossie’s Surf Shop. “You get to meet people from Washington, and California, and all over the coast.”

The Surf Classic division competitions begin at 8 am and end at 4 pm on Saturday, Sept. 9. After the contest, surfers can socialize at a family-friendly evening party at Ossie’s Surf Shop from 6 to 10 pm. Funk band Soul Vibrator will be providing the tunes, and Tic Tac Taco and 10 Barrel will be selling food and beer.

Contest finals and the awards ceremony will be held the following day at Agate Beach from 8 am to 4 pm.

Online registration for the Surf Classic is $40 at, and day-before pricing is $50 per person. Proceeds from registration go toward funding Newport Recreation Center scholarships for economically disadvantaged kids.
