The 10th Annual Pacific City Beach Challenge is set for Sunday, Aug. 4, at Cape Kiwanda State Park, with proceeds benefiting the Nestucca Valley Early Learning Center.

The event, which starts at 9 am, includes a 5k run/walk, a 10k run, and a half-mile kids race, with professional timing provided by Scovel Racing.

High-quality early childhood care and learning are crucial to a full life. The Nestucca Valley Early Learning Center, located in Hebo, is the only state-certified, center-based facility in South Tillamook County preparing children from six weeks to five years of age for successful entry into kindergarten. Toddlers aged one to two are generally in care from 9 am to 3 pm, but extended hours from 7 am to 5 pm accommodate children of working parents.

The center has one full-time director, who handles all human resources functions, payroll, parent engagement, purchasing, grant writing and budgeting. All members of the board of directors are volunteers, as are the parents who help at the race. A registered non-profit, the center depends on tax-deductible donations and grants to cover the modest salaries of its staff, maintain its building and purchase all supplies and materials needed to assure children reach their full potential.

The mission of this organization has been the same since 1991 — to provide high-quality, affordable childcare to the families of South Tillamook County. To maximize opportunity and enrichment, the center works in concert with Community Action Team Head Start, Northwest Regional Early Learning Hub’s Pre-School Promise program, the Community Arts Project, the Tillamook County Library Bookmobile and the Nestucca Valley School District.

The Pacific City Beach Challenge fund raiser is put on entirely by a tireless volunteer board of directors, members and additional community volunteers, who bear all overhead costs. New volunteers are always welcome. Donations are invited from local businesses, to be rewarded with their logo on a commemorative t-shirt. Tax-deductible donations of any amount are always welcome at NVELC, P.O. Box 33, Cloverdale, Oregon, 97112 or by emailing admin@nvelc.com.

Organizers are also appealing for donations of interesting items for the post-race raffle, with donations of local art and craft creations, gift baskets and gift certificates, coupons and goodie-bag swag deeply appreciated. Past beach runs have brought in as many as 150 walkers and runners from throughout the United States.

To register for the Pacific City Beach Challenge, go to runsignup.com/Race/OR/PacificCity/BeachChallenge or email admin@nvelc.com.

Registration for the 5k or 10k is $30 until July 26, and $40 thereafter. Registration for the kids run is $15.

All participants will receive hand-made finisher medals, and coupons for award-winning Pelican Brewing beer and root beer, and for drinks from Stimulus Coffee. So get your running shoes, leash-up your dog and help Nestucca Valley Early Learning Center meet the challenge of continuing to provide the development all children deserve. It depends on you, no kidding.
