The Newport 60+ Adventure Van will head east to Alsea Falls this Saturday, May 4, offering an all-levels hike to two outstanding waterfalls.
The Alsea Falls Trail & Green Peak Falls Trail is a 2.8-mile lightly trafficked route that loops past the 20-Foot Alsea Falls and 60-Foot Green Peak Falls. The trail passes through old-growth and second-growth forest and is a great place to see salmon jumping up a waterfall.
Alsea Falls Recreation Area is next to the South Fork Alsea River, in a lush coastal forest of red cedars, maples and Douglas firs. Throughout the spring and summer, visitors find blooming rhododendrons, Oregon grapes, dogwoods and other wildflowers, as well as numerous wild berries. Beavers build in the river, and deer and elk graze in the young areas of the forest. Across the river, the trail continues on to Green Peak Falls.
The van will leave at 9 am from the Newport 60+ Activity Center and return at around 3 pm.
Participants should pack a brown bag lunch to enjoy in the picnic area. The cost of the trip is $10. To book a spot, call 541-265-9617 or drop by the center at 20 SE 2nd Street.
