Do you know your body mass index, your blood pressure or whether you are at risk of osteoporosis? Numbers than can help answer all these questions and more will be available at the Healthier You Expo in Newport this Saturday, April 27.

Amy Conner, health resource coordinator at Samritan’s Center for Health Education, said knowing your health numbers is a great step toward improving your health and reducing your risk for disease.

“Information is power, and sometimes all you need to get on a healthier path is to know where you’re starting from,” she said. “These screenings give participants good baseline information, and where they go with those results is up to them. But we hope they’ll choose a healthy way forward.”

The third annual health fair, sponsored by Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital, will offer guests 10 free health tests, including screenings for bone density, body composition, lung health, blood pressure, posture analysis, vision/glaucoma, blood glucose levels (requires a three-hour fast), hearing, dental issues and balance and leg strength.

Guests can also speak with health professionals to better understand their screening results and how best to manage their health. More than 30 booths will offer health information on such issues as addiction and recovery, sleep disorders, disaster preparedness, HIV testing, physical therapy, exercise and much more.

Guests can also safely dispose of surplus prescriptions and over-the-counter medications, enjoy food samples, get a chair massage and meet with a specialist to help them find a local provider for their health care. Non-perishable food items are being collected for Food Share of Lincoln County.

Along with representatives from hospital departments, participating community organizations include: Addiction Prevention and Recovery Committee, Advantage Dental, American Red Cross, Food Share of Lincoln County, Healing HeArts, JC Thriftway Market, Life Flight, Lincoln County Health and Human Services, Newport Lions Club, Newport Oregon Hypnotherapy, Newport Recreation and Aquatic Center, OSU Lincoln County Extension Service, Oregon Health Insurance Marketplace, Partnership Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Pacific West Ambulance and SamFit.

The Healthier You Expo, which is free and open to all, will run from 9 am to 1 pm at the Center for Health Education, 740 SW Ninth Street.
