Newport team

Registration is now open for youth basketball and wrestling at the Newport Recreation Center.

The boys’ 7th/8th grade basketball season will kick off on January 27, with players getting the chance to test their skills against teams around Lincoln County. Most games and practices will be Monday through Friday evenings.

The registration fee is $100 and some scholarships are available. Registration deadline is January 12.

Registration is also open for the 1st to 6th grade basketball league, which is aimed at helping students improve skills, learn team play, have fun and develop a passion for the game. Practices are held twice a week and games are played on Saturdays at various locations around Lincoln County. 1st and 2nd graders play on coed teams, while 3rd to 6th graders are split into boy and girl leagues. A skills assessment will be held on November 12 at the recreation center.

Organizers are also looking for volunteer coaches to help with each team. Parents who volunteer receive free registration for their child.

Registration is $50 with some scholarships available. Registration will close once all team spots are filled.

And the Recreation Center is also accepting signups for its 6th to 8th grade girls and boys wrestling program. Players will get the chance to test their skills against teams around Lincoln County and in the Valley. Practices and matches will be Monday through Friday evenings.

The program orients new and experienced wrestlers to the sport, with an emphasis toward developing wrestling techniques, sportsmanship and athletic agility for novice and seasoned wrestlers. Wrestling helps develop skills and knowledge of mental toughness, personal responsibility, nutrition, weight-management and discipline.

Registration fee is $100, with some scholarships available. Registration deadline is November 12.

For more information or to register, contact the recreation center at 541-265-7783 or go to newportoregon.gov/sports.
