A new Tai Chi class at Garibaldi Maritime Museum will give students the chance to test their balance among the boats, starting on Monday, Sept. 10.

“Tai Chi: Moving for Better Balance” will be offered from 2:30 to 3:30 pm every Monday and Friday, through Friday, Nov. 1.

Tai Chi offers additional health benefits, including reduced depression, improved cognitive functioning, reduced arthritic symptoms, improved muscle strength, increased cardio-respiratory endurance, lowered blood pressure, improved sleep quality, increased self-esteem and an overall sense of wellbeing.

Moving for Better Balance is specifically designed to improve balance and prevent falls, the leading cause of injuries in older adults. These classes also benefit those suffering from declining motor function due to physical or other health issues, such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease.

Garibaldi Maritime Museum is located at 112 Garibaldi Avenue. Tuition of $30 is payable at the first class. To sign up, call the museum at 503-322-8411.
