Tips and kit for surviving almost every conceivable emergency situation will be on offer this Saturday, Sept. 21, as the Lincoln County Readiness fair sets up at the Newport Armory.
Running from 11 am to 2 pm, the event aims to help people prepare for a wide range of hazards including earthquakes, tsunamis, flooding, wildfires, winter weather and hazardous material events.
Resources on offer will include examples of emergency kits, both do-it-yourself and pre-made versions; as well as a 12-Step Guide to Readiness that divides the sometimes-overwhelming task up into achievable monthly goals.
The Map Your Neighborhood program will offer tips on how neighbors can come together to plan for emergencies, complete with examples of neighborhood caches. Business owners will be able to get tips on business continuity planning: how to survive a disaster and taking care of employees.
The Lincoln County Animal Shelter will be on hand to offer advice about sheltering in place and evacuating with pets and livetock.
Shut-off tips for gas, water and electricity will be on offer, alongside information on protecting property and how to recover after an event.
New this year, a Kids Korner offers tips on how to talk with kids about disasters, and how to help them emotionally recover in the aftermath. Fun take-home activity sheets will be available to engage kids on their preparedness and helping the whole family be ready.
Vendors will be on site, selling emergency readiness supplies including food ration bars, which guests can try before they buy.
The fair is hosted by Northwest Natural, which will be providing a free lunch to all guests.
The Newport Armory is located at 541 SW Coast Hwy.
