The Oregon Coast has developed a worldwide reputation as a place where visitors willing to brave the elements can snag themselves a unique souvenir in the form of a hand-blown glass float hidden on the beach.
Meanwhile in Newport, visitors can get their hands on a commemorative glass float without getting their shoes sandy, by taking part in Treasures of the Sea, a program that sees floats blown by Oregon Coast Glassworks and The Edge Art Gallery hidden in businesses throughout town.
The 21st annual Treasures of the Sea event runs through Dec. 31, with floats stashed in 17 local businesses ranging from restaurants, lodging, attractions and galleries to retail shops of all kinds. Visit one of the businesses listed at www.newportchamber.org or on a map available from the Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce, fill out an entry form and return it to the float display at the business. Weekly drawings will be held throughout the winter, with the remainder of the floats given away Dec. 31, when each business will select winning names from its entry pool.
Treasures of the Sea is designed to introduce Northwest travelers to the distinctive “value season” in Newport. This is a time of year when slower traffic, great sales at various kinds of businesses and fantastic lodging deals come together to create a unique time of year – especially for those looking to do some holiday shopping in a more relaxed environment. All that is also accompanied by the always-spectacular storm watch season.
