Registration is now open for the fall season of classes at Newport School of Artistic Movement, offering instruction to students of all levels aged three and up.

Director Nancy Mittleman has been training dancers from preschool to professional for more than 40 years. Erika Sugrue, who has danced with Mittleman for more than 20 years, continues as assistant director of the school, helping to teach the younger dancers.

NSAM classes are designed to increase grace, flexibility, balance and strength, drawing not only from ballet, modern, jazz and African dance but also from Pilates and yoga.

“Classes are designed to develop the student’s technical skills and spark their creativity through a process of exploration and discovery,” Mittleman said.

Mittleman is known for the technical quality and the range of dance styles she teaches and her holistic approach to dance, integrating science, art, literature, music, math and much more into her lessons and choreography.

“All classes include improvisations or ‘dance games,’” she said, which increase student’s awareness of the power of ‘body language,’ while enriching and developing their creativity, acting abilities and choreographic skills.”

Additionally, improvisation exercises encourage students to work collaboratively and develop problem-solving and leadership skills. Variations from famous choreographers, partnering, counterbalance techniques and lifting are also incorporated into the curriculum.

Students of NSAM have gone on to study and perform at Juilliard, The Laban School, the San Francisco Ballet and many more.

Mittleman has studied with such luminaries as Martha Graham, Charles Weidman, Leslie Watanabe, Jamey Hampton and Daniel Lewis. In 1990, she received the Honor Award from the Oregon Dance Association for “History in the Making” from the Oregon Dance Association.

Mittleman also directs Pacific Dance Ensemble, a company of teens and young adults, well known to the area for their high-quality and artistic performances. PDE’s most recent productions were “Pinocchia,” performed last spring and their annual Valentine’s performance, “Dances from the Heart.” Auditions for PDE will be held in October.

Students registering for NSAM classes before August 30 will receive a 10-percent discount on the first month’s tuition. For more information, call 541-961-2316 or email pdedance@msn.com.
