Manzanita’s Hoffman Center for the Arts is closed to the public but is still offering North Oregon Coast writers and artists the chance to create and connect.

The fifth Word & Image project is accepting entries through April 30, pairing artists and writers to create original work, each in response to the other’s.

Writers submit three pieces of writing and artists submit three pieces of art. From the submissions, a judging team will select 12 writers and 12 visual artists. The selected contributors will be randomly assigned into pairs — hopefully in person at a Hoffman Center gathering on Friday, June 12. Preparations are underway for a virtual event, just in case. Each writer and artist will be given copies of the other’s submitted work — either printed at the event or electronically.

Over the summer, each writer and each artist will create new work in response to one of the three pieces submitted by their partner. A writer might create a new poem in response to a watercolor, for example. A photographer might make a new image in response to a prose piece. The resulting new works will be due electronically by Friday, July 31.

If everything goes as planned, the artwork will be exhibited at the Word & Image event on October 2, where the writers will also read their new work. The paired work will be printed on broadsides, which will hang in the Hoffman Gallery as well as published in a book. Both will be available for sale.
