Heading Home

Raffle tickets are now available for a chance at winning “Heading Home,” the ocean-themed quilt that will take center stage at the Quilts by the Sea event in August.

Crafted by some 20 members of the Oregon Coastal Quilters Guild, the 64”-by-63” quilt features foundation-pieced blocks, needle-turn applique and crystals with a Mariner’s Compass design.

The compass pattern for the wall quilt is by Judy Niemeyer of Quiltworx, while the ship and lighthouse images are from paintings by Dennis McGregor. Cindy McEntee of Newport and Jane Szabo of Waldport designed the concept and color layouts. Julia Bailey did the intricate needle-turn applique. It was then professionally quilted by Jennifer Reinhart of Newport and embellished with crystals by member Dolores Thomas.

Tickets, a dollar apiece or six for $5, are available from guild members, via e-mail at raffle@oregoncoastalquilters.org, or at Quilts by the Sea, which will take place on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 2 and 3 at the Newport Recreation Center. The winning ticket will be drawn the afternoon of August 3, but ticket holders do not need to be present to win.

Admission to Quilts by the Sea is $6. About 300 quilts will be on display, and guests will have the opportunity to pick their own favorite quilt as well as to bid on a silent auction of small quilts. A Quilters’ Café will be operated by a local 4-H group.
