Tillamook will sew the first stitch in a month-long patchwork of parties this Saturday, Oct. 5, as the inaugural Quilt Month celebration gets underway.
Running from 10 am to 4 pm at Tillamook’s Second Street Plaza, the free kickoff event will include a historical walking tour, a quilt display, geocaching along the quilt trail, and an opportunity to meet local cozy mystery author Arlene Sachitano.
Saturday’s gathering heralds a month-long series of events throughout Tillamook and along the North Coast for quilters of all ages and experience levels, and for anyone who appreciates the art and craft of quilting. The events include everything from quilt shows and sales to kids’ activities to hand-on demonstrations.
On Saturday, Oct. 12, a Painted Quilt Block Workshop will be on offer at the Partners for Rural Innovation Building, 4506 Third Street, Tillamook. Running from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm, this class will focus on painting two-foot-square outdoor barn quilt blocks that are waterproof and ready to hang after the class. All supplies are provided, as well as light snacks and refreshments. Students are encouraged to wear painting clothes and to pack a lunch. Registration, $35 per person, is available at https://paintedquiltblocks.brownpapertickets.com.
The following Saturday, Oct. 19, the South County Quilters and Tuesday Stitchers will host a Quilt Explosion! show and sale at the Kiawanda Community Center in Pacific City, featuring cuddle quilts, bed quilts bed, holiday quilts and more. The event, which is free and open to all, runs from 9 am to 5 pm at 34600 Cape Kiwanda Drive.
More quilts will be on display from Saturday, Oct. 25, through Monday, Oct. 27, when the Tillamook County Quilt Guild hosts its Tidal Treasures “Heart & Soul” Quilt Show at the Tillamook Creamery.
Free and open to all, the show will feature quilts and fabric for sale, a raffle and quilt turning. The show will be available to view from 9 am to 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday and 10 am to 4 pm on Monday at 4165 N Hwy 101, Tillamook.
Throughout October, 13 quilting stores from Astoria to Port Orford will be taking part in Quilt Run 101, giving customers the chance to win a $50 in-store gift certificate, to be awarded on Nov. 1.
Also running throughout October, and all the way to Nov. 17, is “On the Topic of Quilts,” an antique quilt exhibit at the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors 62 and over, $2 for kids aged 10 to 18, and free for children under 10. The exhibit is available to view from 10 am to 4 pm daily except Mondays at 2106 Second Street, Tillamook.
