Poetry and ocean

Corvallis writing coach Rachel Barton will aim to provide poetic inspiration when she visits Newport for a Willamette Writers workshop on Sunday, Nov. 18.

Barton will use the poems of accomplished poets to discuss structure, form, topic, tone, diction, premise and other elements that speak to the reader. She will then offer prompts for the participants to write their own poems.

“All prompts are subject to subversion!” she said.

A poet, writing coach and member of the Calyx Editorial Collective, Barton co-chairs Willamette Writers on the River and is founding editor of Willawaw Journal, an online journal for poetry and art. Her poems have been published in Oregon English, Hubbub, Whale Road Review, Cloudbank, Mom’s Egg Review and elsewhere. Her chapbook, “Out of the Woods,” was released in 2017 and her latest collection, “Happiness Comes,” has just been released from Dancing Girl Press.

The free workshop will run from 2 to 4 pm at Newport Public Library, 35 NW Nye Street.
