Music in the note of ‘Si!’

If you’re thinking of heading out for Italian this weekend, the Newport Symphony Orchestra at the Ocean has a special you might want to consider.

“Bella Italia” will offer a veritable tour of the pasta peninsula, featuring works by Schubert, Ravel, Hertel and Mendelssohn this Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 3 and 4.

Under the direction of Maestro Adam Flatt the program opens with Franz Schubert’s “Overture in C, ‘In the Italian Style.’” Schubert’s concert overtures are vibrant, youthful works, composed during the years 1811 to 1819, when the master was in his teens and early twenties. Also include in the program is Maurice Ravel’s “Le Tombeau de Couperin.”

Johann Hertel’s “Trumpet Concerto no. 3 in D Major” will feature soloist Katherine Evans. Originally from Boston, Evans is the principal trumpet of the Newport Symphony Orchestra and has held principal trumpet positions in several New England orchestras. She has been a soloist with the Brockton and Waltham symphony orchestras in Massachusetts, the Harvard-Radcliffe Bach Society Orchestra and Harvard-Radcliffe Baroque Orchestra. She holds a master’s in trumpet performance from the Longy School of Music and a bachelor’s in English and Music from Harvard. Evans will also be the soloist for the performance of Alan Hovhaness’ “Prayer of Saint Gregory for Trumpet and Strings.”

The concert will conclude with Felix Mendelssohn’s “Symphony no. 4 ‘The Italian,’” which has its origins in the composer’s tour of Europe from 1829 to 1831, during which he was struck by the color and atmosphere of Italy.

Saturday’s performance will start at 7:30 pm, with a pre-concert talk by Flatt at 6:45 pm, while Sunday’s matinée performance will start at 2 pm, both at the Newport Performing Arts Center, 777 W Olive Street.

Each concert will be followed by a complimentary Wine Down reception, giving guests the chance to mingle with the performers while enjoying select wines from the Flying Dutchman Winery of Otter Rock plus a delicious array of food items.

Tickets, $25 and $39 plus fees, or $10 for students, are on sale at the box office, by calling 541-265-2787 or online at NewportSymphony.org.
