Mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine in “Carmen”

Bizet’s opera masterpiece “Carmen” will fill the big screen in Newport this Saturday, Feb. 23, — the latest offering from The Met: Live in HD.

Mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine stars as opera’s ultimate seductress opposite tenor Roberto Alagna, who captivated Live in HD audiences as Don José in 2010.

Soprano Aleksandra Kurzak sings Micaëla, alongside bass Alexander Vinogradov as the swaggering bullfighter Escamillo. Louis Langrée conducts Sir Richard Eyre’s lively production, a favorite in the Met’s repertoire.

The cast also features mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili as the Princess of Bouillon, Adriana’s rival for Maurizio’s affections, and baritone Ambrogio Maestri as Michonnet.

The Newport screening is hosted by Martha Wallace and Nancy White.

The performance will start at 10 am at the Newport Performing Arts Center, 777 W Olive Street. Run time is approximately three hours and 25 minutes, with one intermission.

Tickets, $21 for adults, $18 for seniors and $10 for students, are available from the box office, by calling 541-265-2787 or online at coastarts.org.
