The Element String Quartet will take to the stage alongside the West Linn High School Chamber Ensemble in Newport this Saturday, Jan. 19, for the second of three free Winter Series concerts sponsored by the Oregon Coast Youth Symphony Festival.

The quartet features four talented musicians from the Newport Symphony Orchestra — violinist Casey Bozell, concertmaster of the Newport Symphony; associate concertmaster and violinist Irene Gadeholt; principal violist Shauna Keyes; and cellist Adrienne Welsh. The group will be performing the “Brandenburg Concerto No. 3” by J. S. Bach, “Divertimento in F” by Mozart, Alexander Borodin’s “Quartet No. 2,” “String Quartet” by Maurice Ravel, and Bela Bartok’s “Romanian Folk Dances.”

In addition to being members of the Newport Symphony, members of the quartet have performed with the Oregon Symphony, Eugene Symphony, Portland Opera, Oregon Ballet Theater and Pink Martini.

Saturday’s concert will open with a performance from the West Linn High School String Ensemble under the direction of Georgia Muggli. These talented teenagers will open the evening’s program with “String Quartet Op. 33 No. 6” by Luigi Boccherini, followed by Felix Mendelssohn’s “Sinfonia VII in D minor” and the “Capriol Suite” by Peter Warlock.

The concert will begin at 7 pm at Newport Nazarene Church, 227 NW 12th Street. Admission is free, with donations accepted at the door.
