Irresponsible, foolish and vain, a weak leader sends his land into disarray and his court into uproar. Sound familiar?
No, it’s not the evening news; it’s Shakespeare’s “The Tragedy of King Richard II,” playing on the big screen in Newport this Friday, Feb. 22.
Simon Russell Beale plays the titular king in this visceral new production about the limits of power, directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins.
The performance will be broadcast live from the stage of the Almeida Theatre in London as part of the National Theatre Live series.
The screening, hosted locally by Angela Pieti and Bryn McCornack, starts at 7 pm at the Newport Performing Arts Center, 777 W. Olive Street.
Tickets, $16 for adults, $13 for seniors and $11 for students, are available at the box office, online at www.coastarts.org or by calling 541-265-2787.
