Newport’s Red Octopus Theatre Company will hold auditions this weekend for its upcoming production of Ernest Thompson’s Tony Award-winning play “On Golden Pond.”
The play is the love story of Ethel and Normal Thayer, who are returning to their summer home on Golden Pond for the 48th year. Their tranquility is interrupted when they are visited by their daughter and her new fiancé who then go off to Europe, leaving the fiancé’s teenage son behind for the summer. Heartwarming and humorous, “On Golden Pond” won three Tony Awards in its original Broadway run, and the 1981 film adaptation received 10 Oscar nominations.
Director Barbara Berge is looking for four males and two females for a production that will run from July 19 through August 4, with rehearsals starting in May.
Auditions will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, March 2, at the Newport Performing Arts Center, 777 W. Olive Street. Additional auditions and callbacks will take place at 2 pm on Sunday, March 3. Actors need not prepare a monologue, but will be asked to read scenes from the script and should be prepared to stay for the full, two-to-three-hour duration of the auditions.
