Christine Goerke as

Brünnhilde in “Die Walküre”

Newport will play host to an event of Wagnerian proportions this Saturday, March 30, as The Met: Live in HD brings “Die Walküre” to the Newport Performing Arts Center’s big screen.

Soprano Christine Goerke plays Brünnhilde, the willful title warrior maiden who loses her immortality in opera’s most famous act of filial defiance.

Tenor Stuart Skelton and soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek are the twins Siegmund and Sieglinde, and bass-baritone Greer Grimsley sings the god Wotan. Philippe Jordan conducts this Wagner masterpiece.

Run time is approximately three hours and 55 minutes, with two intermissions. Due to the opera’s long running time, opera box lunches provided by Mo’s Restaurant will be available for $10, offering a choice of salad or sandwich and a dessert. Guests can place their lunch order upon arrival at the Newport Performing Arts Center on Saturday.

Saturday’s screening, hosted by Alex del Vecchio, starts at 9 am at 777 W Olive Street. Tickets, $21 for adults, $18 for seniors and $10 for students, are available from the box office, by calling 541-265-2787 or online at coastarts.org.
