On yet another gray May afternoon I stopped by the Bridge Tender on a recent visit to Seaside.

This charming, iconic beach shack on the banks of the Necanicum River is a dive in the best sense of the term. With its weathered wood exterior, riverfront picture windows and psychedelic patchwork of ceiling lights, the Bridge Tender speaks to a different era, complete with pool tables and a cigarette machine. Even the inclusion of a few flat screen TVs can’t really distract from the charm of the still river outside, standing gray beneath an overcast sky.

Due to its primo location about halfway down Broadway Street between the beach and U.S. Highway 101, the tavern always seems to have a steady flow of human traffic. Inevitably there’s always a gaggle of grizzled locals holding court upon the right angle of the bar, spitting salty conversation into the air. But just as sure as their stasis, there’s also a steady parade of locals and tourists who stop in for just a moment for a shot and beer as they go to and fro along Broadway.

Though the Bridge Tender mostly slings shots and beers, this hasn’t stopped bartender Tiffany Kinnear from coming up with some new cocktails.

Love Potion #9, one of her recent concoctions, is perhaps best described as a screwdriver on steroids — both tart and sweet upfront, followed by a bit of fizz on the backend. It would be a perfect accompaniment as the afternoons warm up and you take a moment to shuck the sand from between your toes on the Bridge Tender’s patio.

2 ounces Absolut Citron

1 ounce Absolut Vodka

1 ounce Triple Sec

1 ounce Cranberry juice

1 ounce Orange juice

Dash of Grenadine

Sierra Mist

Lemon wedges

Lime wedges

Ice

Muddle lemon and lime at the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Pour all ingredients except the Sierra Mist into the shaker with ice. Shake and pour into an ice-filled pint glass. Top off with the Sierra Mist and give it a straw.
