OREGON — The Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition will host a 50th anniversary celebration on July 29. A combination of in-person and online events will be included.

Geologist Orrin Pilkey and author Mary Ellen Hannibal will be featured. Pilkey is one of the world’s leading experts on the conservation of beaches and management of shorelines. Hannibal is the author of “Citizen Scientist: Searching for Heroes and Hope in an Age of Extinction.”

In-person events include two guided beach walks. At 10:30 a.m., citizen science trainer Fawn Custer will lead a tidepool-oriented walk at Sunset Bay State Park will be held. Marine ecologist Stewart Schultz will lead a separate beach walk, starting at 10:30 a.m. at Manhattan Beach. More details on the events are available at oregonshores.org/coastwatch

Other events will be held online. At 3 p.m., executive director Phillip Johnson will discuss Oregon Shores’ history. He will be followed by Pilkey at 4 p.m. for a lecture titled “The Future of Our Beaches.” At 7 p.m., Hannibal will present “The Future Role of Citizen Science in Coastal Conservation.”
