Honorable mention: Astoria High School Fishermen Football
The season ultimately ended with a loss, but that didn’t spoil an otherwise record-breaking, record-making year for the Seaside football program.
Right from the start, the Gulls were one of the favorites contending for the 4A state title.
The 2018 campaign began with a 55-13 win over Henley, the team that ended Seaside’s 2017 season. The victory was followed by wins over Marist and Gladstone. The 70-46 drubbing of the Gladiators was the first of two wins over Gladstone, Seaside’s opponent in the state semifinals.
The Gladiators were also the only team to defeat Banks during the regular season. But despite Seaside’s two solid wins over Gladstone, and Gladstone’s win over Banks … the Braves were the only team that had Seaside’s number.
Banks scored a 10-7 win over Seaside in the regular season, then defeated the Gulls 31-20 in the state championship game on a foggy night in Hillsboro.
The Gulls landed six players on the all-state team, including superhero running back Alex Teubner and three of his personal escorts — offensive linemen Travis Fenton, Isaias Jantes and Paxson VanNortwick.
Teubner was the Cowapa League MVP and finished 2018 with 2,420 yards rushing and a remarkable 44 touchdowns.
Quarterback Payton Westerholm and linebacker Gio Ramirez also received all-state recognition.
Aaron Tanabe will take over as head coach in 2019, after Jeff Roberts — who made it known before the season that 2018 would be his final year as coach — stepped down after leading the Gulls to their magical season.
