R. Gregory Nokes’ novel, ‘Breaking Chains: Slavery on Trial in the Oregon Territory.’

Author R. Gregory Nokes will discuss Oregon’s history of slavery and racism during virtual lecture at 2 p.m. on Saturday at cannonbeachlibrary.org.

Nokes will discuss his books “Breaking Chains: Slavery on Trial in the Oregon Territory” and “The Troubled Life of Peter Burnett: Oregon Pioneer and First Governor of California.” He will also discuss his upcoming book, “Eminent Oregonians.”

“Breaking Chains” was a finalist for the 2014 Oregon Book Award for nonfiction.

Nokes worked in journalism for 43 years, including 25 years at The Associated Press and 15 years at The Oregonian. Since retiring in 2003, he’s written books focused on Pacific Northwest history.
